ATHLETICS

Athletics club takes place after school on Tuesday and is led by Mr Keddie. The children participate in a range of disciplines and will soon taking these into competition with other local schools.

On Monday 15th October the athletics team from year 3,4,5 and 6 went to Cockburn John Charles Academy to take part in the Jess cluster Shield.

We were against Clapgate, Low Road and New Bewerley. The children performed amazingly well with most children competing in a competition like this for the first time. All races were team events and everyone’s personal skills combined perfectly to ensure we won or came second in all 30 races!!

Finally, after all the events had finished, the tension began to build with Mr Keddie needing to side step at least ninety nine questions like ‘have we won?’ ‘What position did we come?’ Etc!!

Eventually, after what seemed like an eternity, the organiser announced that Low Road had come second!! WE HAD DONE IT- HUNSLET ST MARYS WERE DECLARED THE DESERVED WINNERS!!

A big thank you to Jim for driving and all the parents (there were over 12 parents supporting!) who came to cheer us on.
LUFC Foundation 'Road to Wembley' football tournament

LUFC Foundation 'Road to Wembley' football tournament On Wednesday 22nd November the boys competed in the 6 A side football competition. We won three, drew two and lost two, getting to the semi finals. We were beaten by a school who were unbeaten. Excellent performances from all boys. Billy's 'shot', from the half way line, that bounced over the keeper was the team's favourite goal!! We'll need to take the positives from these excellent performances into the league after Christmas so that we can maintain our top of the league position!

We are trying to broaden the after school activities we offer, using the increased Sports Grant to help with further  coaching opportunities. All our clubs are open to both girls and boys and as part of the Leeds Active Schools initiative often lead to competition opportunities.
FOOTBALL

Football club takes place after school on Wednesday afternoons with coaches from the Hunslet Club leading the sessions.

Here is a report from our participation at the Hunslet Club schools' tournament on Monday 9th October.

This evening we went to a football competition at the Hunslet Club. In our team there was me, Myles, Ethan, Donnell, Akwasi, Gabriel, Jack, Ben and Ephraim. We all tried our best to work hard as a team. We won all of our games without conceding any goals. Akwasi scored one of the best goals in the top corner, and Ethan dribbled the whole pitch past everybody and smashed it in the bottom right corner. It felt great to represent Hunslet St Mary's and win every game. Overall it was a great experience and I'm looking forward to doing it again in the future.

GYMNASTICS

Our Gymnastics club takes place on a Thursday afternoon after school. One of our ex-pupils Bianca Nixon leads the sessions which are always well attended. As with other clubs, children will get the opportunity to represent the school in competitions in the coming months.
RUGBY LEAGUE

The school has had a great deal of success in the area of rugby league over the years and has had children who have gone on to represent professional teams like Leeds Rhinos. One of the current England Ladies international squad attended our school and played rugby for us too.

Rugby club takes place on Monday after school. The Leeds Rhinos rugby foundation provide us with a fully qualified coach and the school enters teams into the Under 10 and Under 11 Leeds Schools' cups which take place in the Summer Term.
RISE AND READ CLUBS

Children wishing to come in to their class to read quietly or do reading based activities are welcome to do so on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 8:30am. It is important that the children arrive on time so that they can be involved from activities right from the start. It may not always be possible for a child to join Rise and Read after 8:30.
