PSHE, Citizenship and RSE

Subject Leader: Mrs L Ward.

INTENT

At St. Mary's C of E Primary Academy we want all our children in PSHE to:

  • Learn as much as possible so they will become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society who understand how they are developing personally and socially, and give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
  • Ignite curiosity in themselves to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
  • Carry out good deeds within our school and wider community in order to appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society

IMPLEMENTATION

At St Mary’s C of E Primary Academy, we teach PSHE lessons in class with one timetabled lesson per week. We also have extra discussions and activities that stem from worship themes; events on the SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural) calendar (e.g. Anti-Bullying Week, World Mental Health Day etc.); and professional visitors to our school (e.g. the nurse or fire fighters).

Our weekly lessons use SCARF as a teaching resource. This is by Coram Life Education, who are a leading provider of relationships, health, wellbeing, and drugs education. SCARF (which stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship) provides a whole-school approach to help us teach children about these essential elements – all of which play a key role in preparing children to achieve their best, academically and socially.

SCARF is aligned with the DfE requirements for statutory Relationships and Health Education, and mapped to the PSHE Association programmes of study. Staff use SCARF as a framework to provide resources to support their teaching. SCARF is a whole-school approach to promoting behaviour, safety, achievement and wellbeing.

Outline of our Scheme of Work

SCARF lesson plans have been designed to cover all aspects of PSHE (including RSHE). The SCARF suggested half-termly units provide a spiral curriculum, ensuring age-appropriate teaching and learning from children’s first to final year at primary school.

Long Term Plan:

We are currently reviewing out RSE policy and growing and changing units and will be consulting with parents in order to do this.

Assessment

For each SCARF unit there is a specially designed pre and post-unit assessment activity. We will conducted these twice: this first determines the baseline; it's then repeated at the end of the unit, so that we can monitor children’s progress and identify areas for further development. From these assessments, both children and teachers will be able to see the progress that has been made over the course of each half-termly unit of lesson plans.

Inclusion

Our curriculum is accessible for all, with support for SEND pupils and opportunities to challenge the more able. Teachers will make adaptations to work for children with SEND.

IMPACT

We know that many children have positive and negative experiences and challenges that will influence their future life and happiness. Through PSHE, we hope that when children leave our school they will:

  • Be able to approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life.
  • Be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society.
  • Appreciate difference and diversity and recognise protected characteristics.
  • Recognise and apply the British values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law and liberty.
  • Be able to understand and manage their emotions.
  • Be able to look after their mental health and well-being.
  • Be able to develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future.
  • Understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level.
  • Have respect for themselves and others.
  • Have a positive self-esteem.
