Homework

At St Mary's CofE Primary Academy we have look closely at what research tell us about the effectiveness of homework. With this is mind we have prioritised home learning that we feel will have the most impact in helping your child success in their learning.

 Types of Homework

Reading:

Reading (all children) We recommend up to 20 minutes a day when possible.  This could include:

  •  Students reading their reading book with an adult and recording in their reading records
  • Practising site words
  • Practising phonemes and graphemes
  • Discussing vocabulary and answering question together
  • Completing reading comprehension tasks on the school learning platform

Personalised learning linked to what has been taught in class: Teachers set self-marking homework on the school learning platforms that will allow children to practise key skills linked to the needs of each child or recent learning that has taken place in class.

Multiplication Skills – Children in key year groups will have multiplication tables to practise at home.

Spelling: Teachers set weekly spelling homework in the form of a quiz based on Common Exception Words and National Curriculum Appendices spelling requirements for the specific year group. Where pupils are working at a level lower than their year group, the previous years’ spellings should be taught.

Preparation for Assessment: As children approach key assessments points in their primary school education they may receive additional work to help them prepare best for these assessments
